On China

The eminent historian and strategist reflects on how China’s past illuminates its twenty-first-century trajectory, drawing on forty years of intimate acquaintance with the country and its leaders. In Untitled on China , Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to the country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. Drawing on historical records as well as on his conversations with Chinese leaders over the past forty years, Kissinger examines how China has approached diplomacy, strategy, and negotiation throughout its history and reflects on the consequences for the twenty-first-century world. As Kissinger underscores, the unique conditions under which China developed continue to shape its policies and attitudes toward the outside world. For centuries, China rarely encountered other societies of comparable size and sophistication. China was the "Middle Kingdom," treating the peoples on its periphery as vassal states. At the same time, Chinese statesmen-facing threats of invasion from without and the contests of competing factions within-developed a canon of strategic thought that prized the virtues of subtlety, patience, and indirection over feats of martial prowess. Untitled on China examines key episodes in Chinese foreign policy, from the earliest days through the twentieth century, with a particular emphasis on the modern era. Kissinger illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such events as the initial encounters between China and modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, the opening of relations with the United States, the Tiananmen Square crackdown, and China’s accession to the World Trade Organization. The book traces the evolution of Sino-American relations in the past sixty years, following their course from estrangement to strategic partnership and toward an uncertain future. Kissinger analyzes the two towering figures of the People’s Republic of China, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, and their divergent visions of China’s modern destiny. With a final chapter on China’s twenty-first-century world role, Untitled on China provides a sweeping historical perspective on Chinese foreign policy from one of the premier statesmen of the twentieth century.

Doing Business in China: A Guide to the Risks and the Rewards

$16.81

China is largely insulated from the worst effects of the global downturn, thanks to several factors: its banks have limited links with the international financial system; its institutional and regulatory apparatus is increasingly robust; mainland consumers enjoy low levels of debt and one of the world’s highest national savings rates; and private consumption is rising steadily among the country’s fast-growing middle class. China’s exporters may be doing less well now but the domestic market offers huge opportunities, and the country’s economy is expected to maintain high single-digit growth over the coming years. Many firms have come unstuck in China, often thinking mistakenly that it would be an easy market to crack and that they could rely on their strategies for developed markets to operate in mainland China. This book examines the context in which businesses have to operate in China, the strategies that have succeeded and those that have failed, and it assesses the importance of a range of different factors in making sure any business venture in China is successful. The book contains ten chapters and a number of appendices:Making it work in ChinaThe political and economic contextAssessing the marketInvestment risk: dealing with regulations and operational challengesSetting up: corporate structures and tax issuesMaking acquisitions workHuman resources: attracting and retaining talentDealing with corruption and financial crimeCorporate governance and social responsibilityFuture China

 Essays in international economics.

Essays in international economics.

$49.99

A challenging question in international economics today is the high current account imbalances, and the associated trade imbalances. This is of interest both to net importers (e.g. the United States), and to net exporters, which today are predominantly the East and Southeast Asian economies. Are the enormous trade imbalances sustainable? And if there is to be a reversion toward balanced trade, will the unraveling be an abrupt reversal or will it occur gradually? My dissertation addresses these questions from two different perspectives. Chapter 1 takes a macro-level perspective of the question. Consumption smoothing theory predicts that growing countries should borrow early on and repay when they are wealthier. In the data, we often observe the opposite. For example, emerging economies (particularly in Asia) save in excess of domestic investment, resulting in net exports. I propose a limited commitment model wherein an emerging country is credit constrained in the international markets. To obtain insurance against future income risk, a country must put up collateral to ensure against default. Average net exports will thus be positive during growth. The theory implies that the sign of the trade balance during a growth episode depends on a country's international credibility. Consistent with this implication, I document that European Union countries (unlike emerging economies) generally exhibit a negative trade balance during rapid growth. Chapter 2 focuses more narrowly on the important case of China; this study examines both macro and micro level data to derive potential explanations for the level of saving from the household, and individual, perspective. The individual level data indicates the existence of cohort specific wage shocks: succeeding generations have greater human capital levels, and accordingly obtain higher wages. Using the standard lifecycle model as a starting point, I add the cohort specific wage levels. As a result, an individual's

Exorbitant Privilege: The Rise and Fall of the Dollar and the Future of the International Monetary System

Exorbitant Privilege: The Rise and Fall of the Dollar and the Future of the International Monetary System

$17.95

For more than half a century, the U.S. dollar has been not just America’s currency but the world’s. It is used globally by importers, exporters, investors, governments and central banks alike. Nearly three-quarters of all $100 bills circulate outside the United States. The dollar holdings of the Chinese government alone come to more than $1,000 per Chinese resident. This dependence on dollars, by banks, corporations and governments around the world, is a source of strength for the United States. It is, as a critic of U.S. policies once put it, America’s “exorbitant privilege.” However, recent events have raised concerns that this soon may be a privilege lost. Among these have been the effects of the financial crisis and the Great Recession: high unemployment, record federal deficits, and financial distress. In addition there is the rise of challengers like the euro and China’s renminbi. Some say that the dollar may soon cease to be the world’s standard currency–which would depress American living standards and weaken the country’s international influence. In Exorbitant Privilege, one of our foremost economists, Barry Eichengreen, traces the rise of the dollar to international prominence over the course of the 20th century. He shows how the greenback dominated internationally in the second half of the century for the same reasons–and in the same way–that the United States dominated the global economy. But now, with the rise of China, India, Brazil and other emerging economies, America no longer towers over the global economy. It follows, Eichengreen argues, that the dollar will not be as dominant. But this does not mean that the coming changes will necessarily be sudden and dire–or that the dollar is doomed to lose its international status. Challenging the presumption that there is room for only one true global currency–either the dollar or something else–Eichengreen shows that several currencies have shared this international role over

 Petroleum Politics of the Caspian

Petroleum Politics of the Caspian

$140

Caspian Energy Politics analyses the role of oil and gas in the development of the three main petroleum exporters in the Caspian region – Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – and how energy resources influence interactions with semi-authoritarian Russia and China. Due to volatile commodity prices and competition for the resources in and around the Caspian Sea, the governments of these petroleum-exporters face a series of difficult decisions. These governments have sought to balance short-term incentives to spend oil revenues as a means to maintain power against the need for a long-term strategy for managing these assets, choices which have further implications for how these countries align themselves internationally. By illuminating important linkages between domestic and international dynamics in these states, the book provides a fresh perspective on energy politics and the impact of petroleum on the development of the Caspian petroleum producers. Expert contributors from Central Asia and the South Caucasus and international scholars provide context-specific insights into the incentives affecting decision-makers that can provide a foundation for strategies to help the countries in the region overcome the negative effects of reliance on oil and gas. As such, the book will be a valuable tool for business actors seeking to understand the role of Chinese and Russian companies in the region, as well as local and international policymakers and non-governmental organisations.

Chapters: Romanian Land Forces, Romanian Air Force, Romanian Naval Forces, Moldavian Military Forces, Detaşamentul de Intervenţie Rapidă, Arms Industry in Romania, Romanian Armed Forces Ranks and Insignia, List of Equipment of the Romanian Land Forces, Bucharest Garrison, Soldat. Excerpt: Before 1989, Romania was among the top ten arms exporters in the world, however its arms industry declined considerably during the 1990s. Exports fell from roughly $1 billion before 1989 to about $43 million in 2006 , and the number of employees also fell from 220,000 in 1990 to 20,000 in 2009 . Sales to the Romanian Armed Forces have plunged after Romania’s accession to NATO in 2004, as factories continue to produce Warsaw Pact -caliber weapons and ammunition, which are incompatible with their Western counterparts. There have also been criticisms related to the quality of Romania’s military products, due to the obsolescence of factory equipment and production methods. The Cugir weapons plant, for example, still uses some machinery dated from 1890. As of 2009, sales are roughly evenly divided between the Romanian state and foreign customers such as European Union and Arab countries such as Egypt , Algeria and Irak . Other countries which have shown interest in Romanian equipment include Afghanistan , Israel , Switzerland , the United States , the United Arab Emirates , India , Georgia and a slew of African countries . There have been some signs of slight recovery, with exports reaching 141 million in 2009. However, the arms industry in Romania still lags behind neighboring countries such as Ukraine , Bulgaria and Serbia . In recent years, the Romanian government has called, unsuccessfully, for the lifting of the European Union arms embargo on the People’s Republic of China
