”There’s some good karma up in here”: A case study of white school leadership in an urban context. $49.99 As educators work to improve achievement within the current policy environment of accountability and “subgroups,” their attention has been drawn to considerations of race, culture, and learning in schools. Yet few school leaders have the preparation or knowledge to assist teacher learning about these issues.;Theories of culturally relevant pedagogy focus on how teachers can teach subject matter in a culturally appropriate manner, and previous scholarship has considered culturally relevant pedagogy in relation to teaching and learning. This inquiry examines it in relation to leadership content knowledge. Critical race theory offers a lens through which to examine the relationship of beliefs and knowledge when considering race and racism in the American educational system and for further situating an examination of school leadership and cultural competency.;The research questions I address are: (1) What kind of perspective toward students is held by educators in the school? How do these perspectives connect with teaching, learning, and leadership? (2) How is culturally relevant pedagogy represented in the schools? How do school leaders foster or hinder CRP in their schools? (3) In which contexts and events in the practice of school leadership do issues of race, culture, and learning surface? How are the issues mediated by the principal and other school leaders?;This case study of three White principals reveals that they faced many issues of race, culture, and learning, yet tended to be colorblind and colormute. Even when they identified issues, they were reluctant to address them or without resources, thus ignoring situations that could have served as sites of teacher learning. Several White teachers held dynamic and nuanced asset perspectives toward children of color. New teachers in particular learn a “repertoire of racialized and ‘cultural’ comparisons” (Pollock, 2001) as a key component of belonging to their community, a repertoire that knowledgeable school |

1652 Establishments $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Colfe’s is a co-educational independent day school in Horn Park in the London Borough of Greenwich. The school is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference. The official Visitor to the school is HRH Prince Michael of Kent. Colfe’s is one of the oldest schools in London. The parish priest of Lewisham taught the local children from the time of Richard Walker’s chantry, founded in 1494, until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. Rev. John Glyn re-established the school in 1568 and it was granted a Charter by Elizabeth I in 1574. Abraham Colfe became a Governor in 1613 and the school was re-founded bearing his name in 1652. Colfe declared that the aim of the school was to provide an education for the boys from “the hundred of Blackheath”. He invited the Leathersellers’ Company, one of London’s livery companies, to be the trustee of his will. Links between the school and the Leathersellers remain strong. The school was originally built around Colfe’s house with an entrance in Lewisham Hill. The site was progressively developed and extended, until 1890 when it was completely re-built on the same site with its entrance now in Granville Park. During the Second World War the school was first evacuated to Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and then to Frome in Sommerset. A period of inactivity on the Western front led about 100 boys to return to London, so the school was spilt for a few years. In 1944 a V2 (Flying bomb) aimed at Lewisham Railway junction almost totally destroyed the school. At the end of the War with no school buildings and the pupil role having halved it was uncertain if the school would continue. In London the school was split between two sites – Beacon Road School in Hither Green and Ennersdale Road School, about … More: |

Excerpt: Cable in the Classroom is an American organization that assists the cable television industry in providing educational content to schools. The organization was founded in 1989. A Canadian organization, also called “Cable in the Classroom” (“La câblo-éducation” in French ), was founded in 1995, and has the same scope as the US organization.Cable stations broadcast educational programs at specific times (usually early in the morning) commercial-free and notify Cable in the Classroom as to when the shows will be on. This way, educators are able to record the programs for free and use them in school as learning tools for children.Over the years however, many networks have discontinued any effort at promoting Cable in the Classroom or setting aside programming for the organization’s purposes, ceding more to direct marketing of their educational programming to teachers and school districts via their home video departments, their Internet sites, or in the cases of networks such as ABC Family , The Disney Channel and Cartoon Network , removing their involvement altogether. Another factor has likely been the decline in VHS recorders, as DVRs with non-portable storage have become the recording format of choice over DVD recorders , the equivalent successor to VCRs.Programs The Following is a brief listing of programs used for “Cable In The Classroom” Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at E/I , which stands for “educational |

Clitheroe Royal Grammar School continues to thrive on two sites with the Sixth Form Centre occupying the historic buildings in York Street and the Main School at the former Girls Grammar School buildings on Chatburn Road. The main school uniform consists of: The Main School intake each year is 120 children who have each passed the 11-plus entrance exam, with 100 from within a ‘Catchment Area’ and 20 from outside. These are then divided into four forms (C, R, G and S), of 30 pupils each. This means the pupil population at Main School is about 600 (120 per year, with five years). Sixth Form entry is based on GCSE performance and takes in over 300 students per year. In and out of school: Out-of-school time programs, nonprofits, Title I and the distribution of education resources in New York City. $49.99 This dissertation adds to the literature on the relationship between schools, neighborhoods and academic achievement by examining the distribution of two educational resources that vary by neighborhood and school: out-of-school time (OST) programs and Title I funding. While the traditional role of OST programs has been to provide childcare, safety and positive youth development, OST programs are now an important mechanism for providing additional academic resources to low-income children. Using a unique dataset on the characteristics of public elementary schools, population, OST programs and the nonprofit sector, the first two papers explore the interplay between OST programs, public school quality, and nonprofit location across elementary school attendances zones in New York City. The findings support the importance of geography as a determinant of OST location, with fewer OST sites in zones outside of Manhattan, regardless of the characteristics of the population or public schools. Additionally, the location decisions of nonprofit organizations contribute to the distribution of OST sites, as zones with OST sites have a larger share of independent nonprofit organizations than those with no sites. My third paper utilizes regression discontinuity to examine the impact Title I, the largest federal compensatory education program, on school spending and academic achievement. Results indicate that Title I schools receive statistically significantly more Title I money than non-Title I schools, and that this increases for Title I schools as the percent of poverty increases. Additionally, the analyses show that Title I schools, particularly those near the Title I poverty cutoff, have significantly higher expenditures than non-Title I schools. Finally, while Title I schools near the cutoff have slightly higher math and reading scores compared to non-Title I schools near the cutoff, these results are not statistically significant. The findings suggest that while Title I |

Lonely Children and Adolescents: Self-Perceptions, Social Exclusion, and Hope $169 From texting and social networking sites to after-school activities, young people have many opportunities to interact with one another, and yet loneliness and isolation trouble today’s youth in increasing numbers. Many children and teens report feeling lonely even in the midst of family and friends, and childhood loneliness is a prime risk factor for adult alienation.Lonely Children and Adolescents: Self-Perceptions, Social Exclusion, and Hope illuminates seldom-explored experiences of social isolation among young people as well as the frustrations of the parents and teachers who wish to help. This groundbreaking book conceptualizes loneliness not simply as the absence of social connections, but as a continuum of developmental experience, often growing out of the conflict between opposite needs: to be like one’s peers yet be one’s unique self. The author draws clear distinctions between loneliness and solitude and identifies genetic and environmental characteristics (i.e., social, psychological, familial, and educational) that can be reinforced to help children become more resilient and less isolated. In addition, therapeutic approaches are described that challenge loneliness by encouraging empowerment, resilience, and hope, from proven strategies to promising tech-based interventions.Highlights include:• Developmental perspectives on loneliness.• Schools and the role of teachers, from preschool to high school.• Peer relations (e.g., cliques, bullies, exclusion, and popularity).• Lonely children, lonely parents: models of coping.• Loneliness in the virtual world.• Prevention and intervention strategies at home, at school, in therapy.Asking its readers to rethink many of their assumptions about social competence and isolation, this volume is essential reading for researchers and professionals in clinical child, school, developmental, and educational psychology; allied |

One-Room Schools of the Middle West $234.66 The Midwest’s one-room schools were, Fuller observes, the most democratic in the nation. Located in small, independent school districts, these schools virtually wiped out illiteracy, promoted democratic values, and opened up new vistas beyond the borders of their students’ lives. Entire communities, Fuller shows, revolved around these schools. At various times they were used as churches, polling places, sites of political caucuses, and meeting halls for local organizations. But as America urbanized and the movement to consolidate took hold in rural counties, these little centers of learning were left at the margins of the educational system. Some were torn down, some left to weather away, some sold at auction, and still others transformed into museums. Despite its demise, Fuller argues, here was a school system that worked. His book offers a timely reminder of what schools can accomplish when communities work closely together to educate their children. |
